BAKEWELL

It is a short drive to the historic market town of Bakewell from Haddon Grove Farm Caravan & Camping, which is the largest town in the Peak District National Park.

The town remains largely unchanged with attractive stone buildings, a medieval five-arched stone bridge and various courtyards to explore.

There is an interesting story about the history of the legendary Bakewell Pudding, which claims that the pudding was made by mistake by a local cook in the mid-19th century.

Instead of adding the pudding mixture and then the jam, the cook added the jam first and topped it with the pudding mixture. The result was so good that the recipe was adopted and the puddings are still made the same way today.

Every Monday there is a busy outdoor market, which the town has held since the early 1300s; a short walk from the town centre is the livestock market, also held every Monday, during which you can experience the theatre-like auction.

Along with a variety of cafes, pubs and restaurants, the town has a wide range of shops from butchers to cook shops, clothing retailers to gifts and accessories, bookshops and jewellers.

If you visit the campsite in July you can enjoy Bakewell Carnival Week and Well Dressing, and for those visiting in August there is the annual Bakewell Show, which is one of the oldest agricultural events in the country.

There are various walks in and around the town, including walks along the river along which you can reach the award-winning Thornbridge Brewery’s ever popular Tap Room.
